Start With Why_Simon Sinek
Watching the video of this talk, made sense to me and allowed me to think about my future presentation skills. When I was a freshman, I was told that form follows function and I applied that to all my designs.
Sinek's talk about starting with why is the exact same idea. You cannot create something if you do not have a higher purpose for the space, it's the same with Apple computers. Sinek says it this way, "No one buys what you do, they buy why you do it."
To become a great interior designer, this mindset will set you apart. Starting with the why does not limit your abilities instead it allows you to create something people never thought they needed. People can buy ordinary computers or hire ordinary designers everyday but when you create an experience with a function that outweighs the results, people will turn to you.
This is great to keep in mind when heading towards the workforce. You must know your worth; employers love confidence, not cockiness. Use concepts that tap into emotion and greater purpose, that will make any person or company stand out.

Very insightful comments- why do you want to be an interior designer?
ReplyDeleteWhat is your mission?
I want to be an interior designer because I have found that the way I think is creative but empathetic. Being an architect would not have satiated that. I want to create spaces that make people feel happy and safe. I would very much like to become familiar with the hospitality side of design just for that reason. I like to interact with people and I'm so excited to call it my vocation.
ReplyDeleteI have a contact for you- I wish you had been able to attend the ASID Holiday Party.
ReplyDeleteThere were so many firms there recruiting. Mehhan Pearson at Gary Lee Partners was discussing options with several students. mpearson@garyleepartners.com; you may tell her I referred you. I suggest approaching her by asking for a phone interview to discuss career paths in the industry - a soft approach rather than a direct request for a job.
